Auditions for the 2006-2007 Season

The Saratoga Springs Youth Orchestra (SSYO) continues its 9th season by announcing auditions for skilled and highly motivated young musicians willing to accept the challenge of great music high performance expectations and the individual responsibility for preparing their part with limited rehearsal time.

We encourage you to audition and if selected trust that you will find the experience to be a memorable one.

SSYO offers these exciting performance opportunities:
Symphony Orchestra
String Orchestra
Wind Ensemble
Coached Chamber Groups, including:
String Ensemble Flute Ensemble
Clarinet Ensemble Brass Ensemble
Jazz Combo Woodwind Quintet

To audition, a student must perform a solo of approximately 5 minutes at a NYSSMA level 5 or higher or equivalent.

All Musicians:
Prepare all major scales through three flats and sharps for two or three octaves (depending on instrument and key).
Sight reading is required.

Woodwind, and Brass:
Must also play a chromatic scale.

Trombones:
A knowledge of tenor clef would be helpful.

Violins and Violas:
Must play at a NYSSMA level 5 or higher or equivalent.

Cellos and Basses:
Must play at a NYSSMA level 5 or higher or equivalent.

Percussionists:
Must perform snare drum, timpani, and mallet instrument solos

To schedule an audition, please complete the enclosed application and return it to the SSYO office along with a $20.00 registration fee (checks made out to SSYO) to:

· Concert with Saratoga Children's Chorus
· Performance at Saratoga Springs 1st Night
· Side by Side Concert with Glens Falls Symphony Orchestra
· Concerto Competition (Winners play at Troy Savings Bank Music Hall)
· Master Class workshops with renowned artists in the area. (included in tuition)
· Chamber Music Program
· Final Concert at Troy Savings Bank Music Hall
Rehearsals are held on Sunday evenings to reduce conflicts with other school and social activities. A typical rehearsal schedule is as follows:
4:30 -5:30 Chamber Group Rehearsals
5:30 – 6:45 String Orchestra Wind Ensemble
6:45 – 7:00 Break
7:00 – 8:30 Symphony Orchestra

Tuition and Fees

Symphony Orchestra + Wind Ensemble - $300

Wind Ensemble only - $200
Jazz Ensemble Program $100
Tuition includes eligibility for the chamber music programs, attendance at all master classes, and opportunity to participate in the Concerto Competition
Wind Ensemble Members participate in Symphony Orchestra via audition
Upon completion of your application, you will be notified by mail of your audition time.
After the audition, you will be notified of your acceptance in the String Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and or Symphony Orchestra.
